We build with the island, not on it — local stone, native planting, and water drawn and reused with care.

Furniture, ceramics and linens come from Cretan workshops we know by name. Every room carries their work.

No schedules, no crowds. Twenty-five suites, so that every guest is known and every evening is your own.

A stone press is raised on the hillside above Mirabello Bay, and for half a century the village brings its harvest up the mule path every November.

The last pressing; the millstone stops and the terraces go wild. The family keeps the key and the deeds, and waits.

The estate
Avra began with a family that refused to let an old olive press fall to ruin. What they built around it feels neither like a hotel nor like anyone else’s home, but like the most perfect version of your own — one you might dream of, on a hillside above the sea in Crete.
Restored stone by stone by local masons and set among terraces of ancient cedar and olive, every suite is turned to catch Mirabello Bay at the precise moment the sun slips behind the Dikti mountains.

The restaurant
From intimate garden pavilions to the clifftop Grand Villa with its private heated pool, each residence is a world entire — furnished with bespoke Cretan craft and antique finds from the island's markets.

Anchor off the empty beach for a swim while the crew lays out a supper of the day’s catch.

Back under sail as the sun goes down behind the Dikti mountains, home by the last light.

The experiences
Avra is not a place of spectacle. It is a place of accumulation — of heat, of stillness, of the particular quality of light that exists only here, only in late afternoon, when the bay turns to bronze and the sea holds its breath.
Ancient Greek therapies, volcanic stone treatments

Warm stone, wild-herb oils and spring water

Reviews
“We came for four nights and stayed seven. Dinner inside the old olive press is something we still talk about.”
“Nothing here feels staged. The rooms smell of linen and thyme, the staff remember how you take your coffee, and the caïque trip to the hidden coves was the best afternoon of our year. We are already planning to come back for the olive harvest.”
“We have stayed in many beautiful hotels, but few that feel this rooted in their place. The masons’ stonework, the wine from Sitia, the evening light over Mirabello Bay — every detail belongs to Crete. Quiet, generous and completely unhurried.”
“The pool at sunset, a glass of Vidiano, and the Dikti mountains turning violet. Perfect.”
“Our children still ask about the long Sunday table under the cedars. Warm, easy, and so beautifully done.”
“The kind of place where you stop checking the time. Breakfast on the terrace, a walk through the groves, a swim from the cove, and a dinner that tasted of the hillside it came from. We left lighter than we arrived.”

Moments
Long breakfasts in the shade, a hand trailing in still water, children running into the cove at sunset, dinner that lasts until the stones cool. These are the moments our guests take home — and the reason so many of them return.
